Job Description

Achieving Success Together

Mill Green School is a Community Special School in St Helens for young people aged 14 to 19. Our students have a wide range of needs, including severe learning difficulties (SLD), profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), complex physical and medical needs, and autism. Many also experience social communication difficulties or sensory and physical impairments. Our specialist staff help each young person build the communication, independence and confidence they need for adult life.

The Governing Body is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, motivated and resilient Teacher for our Nurture / Complex Needs provision to join our dedicated team. This is an excellent opportunity to work in a supportive school where professional development is actively encouraged and every young person is valued.

In this role you will lead learning for young people who need a highly personalised, nurturing approach. That means building trust, supporting emotional regulation and wellbeing, and adapting the curriculum so every learner can engage and make progress. The successful candidate will share our belief that every young person can achieve their potential, whatever barriers they face.

Experience in a nurture or complex needs setting would be a real advantage. Outstanding teaching skills, the right motivation, strong personal qualities and resilience matter just as much, and we will support the right person to develop their specialist practice.

We are looking for someone who:

  • 💡 Is passionate about teaching and learning
  • 💛 Creates a calm, safe and nurturing environment where young people feel secure and ready to learn
  • 🤝 Builds positive, trusting relationships with young people, families and colleagues
  • 🧩 Adapts teaching creatively to meet complex sensory, communication and emotional needs
  • 🎯 Holds high expectations and is committed to the best possible outcomes for every learner
  • 🌱 Celebrates progress in all its forms, however small the steps
  • 👥 Works well as part of a team, including therapists and support staff, and contributes positively to school life

Working at Mill Green School

As a teacher at Mill Green School, you will widen the learning opportunities for our young people and help prepare them for adulthood and their next steps, whether that is further education, employment, supported living or greater independence in their community.

You will deliver inclusive, responsive and innovative teaching in a nurturing, supportive environment. We want teachers who aim high every day, bring fresh ideas and are confident to try new approaches. You will do this within a safe and stimulating environment where every learner can achieve, feel valued and feel secure.

Investing in you

When you join our team, you will benefit from:

  • Bespoke training and continuing professional development (CPD) tailored to specialist practice
  • Networking and professional dialogue days with colleagues at Mill Green and across other settings
  • A supportive team that will help you grow and reach your potential as a specialist teacher

We know that as part of the Mill Green team you will do great things, and we will support you every step of the way. You can expect:

  • A comprehensive induction programme to help you settle confidently into your role
  • Ongoing professional development, including coaching and mentoring, an e-learning platform and online training courses
  • A rolling programme of role-specific CPD and positive behaviour support training
  • A friendly, dedicated and supportive team of colleagues and leaders
  • Access to the SAS Employee Wellbeing Support Service, both in and outside of school
  • An annual paid wellbeing day
  • Real opportunities for career development and progression

At Mill Green we believe that happy, motivated staff create the best learning experience. That’s why we prioritise wellbeing, celebrate achievements, and foster a strong sense of belonging.

Mill Green is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references. By engaging in this recruitment process, shortlisted candidates consent to an on-line search in line with the Keeping Children Safe in Education Statutory Guidance.

We strongly encourage prospective candidates to visit the school and see what we are about; we know that how we fit you is as important as how you will fit us. Visits can be arranged by contacting the school office on 01744 678760.
